No Break In Joint Work For Crew Members
Houston TX (SPX) Oct 06, 2009 After a weekend of handover, orientation and cargo transfer, the nine crew members aboard the International Space Station continued their joint work Monday. Expedition 21 Flight Engineers Maxim Suraev and Jeff Williams spent time familiarizing themselves with their new surroundings. Expedition 20 Commander Gennady Padalka and Flight Engineer Roman Romanenko joined Suraev to complete the first triple Soyuz VHF communication test, designed to verify that all three docked Soyuz vehicles could talk to one another in the event of a triple Soyuz evacuation from the station. Romanenko worked with the Russian experiment Plants-2, which researches growth and development of plants under spaceflight conditions in a greenhouse facility in the Zvezda service module. Williams worked with the Bodies In the Space Environment, or BISE, experiment. Sponsored by the Canadian Space Agency, BISE compares pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight data to evaluate adaptation to, the effects of and recovery from long-duration spaceflight on the crew members' perception of up and down. Williams, along with Expedition 20 Flight Engineers Michael Barratt and Nicole Stott, answered questions from ABC News and WTVT-TV in Tampa, Fla. Williams, Suraev and spaceflight participant Guy Laliberte arrived at the orbital outpost Friday. Williams and Suraev are relieving Padalka and Barratt who will depart with Laliberte aboard the Soyuz TMA-14 Saturday. Their departure will signify the end of Expedition 20 and the start of Expedition 21. Expedition 20 Flight Engineer Frank De Winne will serve as Expedition 21 commander.
