Road and railway connections in western Austria improved Tuesday, although some popular ski resorts remained cut off after extreme snowfall over the past week, local authorities said.

The Tyrolean resorts of Ischgl and Galtuer were not accessible as the main road into the valley was closed.

Felled trees and a risk of avalanches also interrupted rail traffic and blocked roads further eastwards in Salzburg and Styria provinces, where several small towns were also isolated.

But the avalanche threat was scaled down one notch to level 3 out of 5 in Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg, and the situation had generally improved since the weekend, authorities said.

On Monday, the entire western region of Vorarlberg had been cut off from the rest of Austria after four days of snowfall piled between two and three metres (6.5-10 feet) on the ground, blocking all road and rail access.

Although railway connections were still impossible, all roads were open again Tuesday in that part of the country.
