The U.S. Navy has given Philadelphia Gear Corporation a contract to provide main reduction gear engineering for Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers.
The contract includes options that can potentially bring the cumulative value to over $1 billion. Work is scheduled to be done at multiple locations in California, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Florida.
Reduction gears allow ships to adjust their input speed to a lower output speed.
DDG 51 guided-missile destroyers are used by the U.S. Navy for both offensive and defensive missions, and can operate either independently or as part of a carrier strike group. Additional capabilities include anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare.
Work on the contract is expected to be complete by February 2017.
